SALON CONSTRUCTION · GTA

Salon Construction in the GTA

Designed to pass public health inspection the first time.

BuildwithMGI is a licensed Ontario general contractor building hair, nail, beauty and wellness salons across the GTA. Founded in 2014, the firm builds each salon to Ontario's personal service settings regulation, with dedicated handwash sinks, reprocessing areas, hot water sized for peak demand and ventilation for chemical services. Every build is ready for the public health inspection before opening.

Owner risks

Three ways a salon build costs you your opening.

Failed inspection

A missing handwash sink or a reprocessing sink in the wrong place means rework after the finishes are in. We lay out every sink to the regulation before rough-in.

Undersized hot water and drains

Shampoo bowls overwhelm a standard heater and old drain lines. We size both to peak demand.

Chemical vapours

Nail and colour services without source capture drive complaints from staff, clients and neighbours. We design exhaust at the station.

Regulatory path

Five approvals. We build to every one of them.

FAQ

Questions owners ask.

What sinks does Ontario require in a salon?

Ontario Regulation 136/18 requires a sink used only for handwashing, conveniently located and supplied with hot and cold running water. Salons that reuse equipment also need a separate reprocessing sink large enough to immerse the biggest tool, kept out of any toilet room and away from service areas. Hair- and barber-only salons can be exempt if they reprocess before and after each business day.

Do I have to notify public health before opening a salon?

Yes. Ontario requires personal service settings to notify the local public health unit before opening or renovating, and Toronto Public Health asks for at least 14 days' notice. The inspection checks the finished space, so the build has to meet the regulation from day one.

Does my salon need a municipal licence?

In Toronto, hair salons, nail salons and similar personal services need a City licence, and other GTA municipalities set their own rules. The zoning also has to permit a personal service use at your address, which we confirm before you sign the lease.

What ventilation does a nail salon need?

The regulation requires ventilation sufficient for safe services. For nail and chemical services we design local exhaust at each station plus general exhaust and make-up air, so vapours are captured at the source instead of drifting through the salon.

How much hot water does a salon need?

Shampoo bowls draw heavily at peak times, so we size commercial or tankless water heaters to simultaneous bowl use. We also fit hair interceptors at shampoo sinks and confirm the unit's water service and drains can carry the load.
